Description/notes on Brenda Stumpf's piece titled Cause:
Watercolor, charcoal and plaster on paper.

When the Holy Roman Empire saw itself trapped geographically by the pagan Normans in the northwest and the Moslem Saracens in the southeast, Pope Urban II initiated the People's crusade in 1095. Made up mostly of the dregs of society, 150,000 to 300,000 went across southern Europe. One division slaughtered 10,000 Jews in the Rhineland, then forgot about the Holy Land and dispersed.
